One of the best things about living in Atlanta apartments is being able to explore all of the incredible restaurants this metro area is famous for. The city of Atlanta is known as a very cosmopolitan destination for diners, but it hasn’t lost sight of its roots. In fact, if you have a hankering for some good, down-home southern food, Atlanta is the place to be.

Atlanta restaurants specializing in southern cuisine run the gamut from simple eateries to more upscale destinations. Some of the best restaurants to explore for sweet southern flavors include:

The Horseradish Grill – The oldest continuously operating restaurant in Atlanta can be found at 4320 Powers Ferry Road. The Horseradish Grill is famous for its blending of new styles with old tastes. This translates to organic foods that are pure southern in style. Count on seeing such things as biscuits and fried chicken on the menu, along with grits and Gulf shrimp. The prices here are very reasonable, ranging from about $1 to $15. Business casual dress is the standard here.

Thelma’s Kitchen and Rib Shack – If affordable southern food is what you have in mind, this is one of the best restaurants in the city of Atlanta. Thelma’s is found at 302 Auburn Ave. NE. It features a very family friendly atmosphere and good, old fashioned menu items. Topping the list of eats are such dishes as catfish, sweet potato pie, ribs and fried chicken. The prices are quite low and the dress code is all casual.

Mae’s Soul Food – Located at 34 Peachtree St. SW, Mae’s is famous for its award-winning fried chicken and old family recipes that have been handed down for generations. The prices here are reasonable, and the portions are generally described as “heaping.” Mae’s specializes in such dishes as smothered pork chops, collard greens, corn bread and fish. Breakfast includes grits, eggs, bacon, pancakes, biscuits and more.

Carver’s Grocery – If you’re looking to fill up but not empty your wallet, you’ll find Carver’s Grocery at 1118 West Marietta Street between 11am and 3pm for lunch. This country store is serving up scrumptious fried chicken, peach cobbler, red velvet cake, sweet potato casserole, collards and so much more. Make sure you come hungry because the portions are huge and the sweet tea is heaven. It’s good southern home cooking without the frills.

The South City Kitchen – This eatery is located at 1144 Crescent Ave. It specializes in nouveau southern food, including cheese grits and barbecued swordfish. Don’t worry though; you can still dive into a plate of old-fashioned, pan-fried catfish rounded out with mustard greens and other sides. Fluffy biscuits and cornbread are staples of this establishment. The prices for dishes can climb to about $30 and plan on business casual attire.

Atlanta restaurants run the gamut from upscale cosmopolitan eateries to ethnic establishments. If you’re dying for some good, down-home cooking, however, you won’t be disappointed. There are plenty of places to get a solid fix of Southern food with biscuits on the side.
